The Reverend Anthony Lavay Trufant was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 14, 1962.  He is the son of Mrs. Sylvia Trufant and the nephew of the Rev. Dr. Amos C. Brown, the distinguished pastor of the Third Baptist Church of San Francisco, California. Rev. Trufant was married in August 1990, to Attorney Muriel L. Goode, daughter of W. Wilson Goode, the former mayor Philadelphia, Pa, and Mrs. Velma W. Goode.  The Trufants have two daughters, Sharise and Toni.
 
Rev. Trufant matriculated at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia and at the Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York where he received his B.A. and Masters of Divinity degrees, respectively. Presently, he is a doctoral candidate in pastoral counseling at Hebrew Union College of New York City.  In May of 1988, Dr. Amos C. Brown, his uncle and mentor, ordained Rev. Trufant.  

During Rev. Trufant’s pastoral ministry, he has served as the Associate Minister of the Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA; Associate Chaplain at the University of Rochester Interfaith Chapel in Rochester, NY; and Pastor of the Church of Christian Compassion in Philadelphia, P.A.  Currently Rev. Trufant is the esteemed Senior Pastor of the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Brooklyn, New York, to which he was called in September, 1990.  

Rev. Trufant is involved actively in both church and community-based organizations.  Currently, he serves as the Chairperson of the Emmanuel Baptist Church Economic Development Corporation, the Ordination Council of ABC Metro New York, and the Concerned Citizens Coalition.  Rev. Trufant volunteers as a NYC Clergy Liaison for Police-Community Affairs in Brooklyn, New York.  Additionally, he teaches as an adjunct faculty member at Auburn Theological Seminary in New York City.  A recipient of various civic and religious awards, Rev. Trufant was inducted into the College of Ministers at Morehouse College in April, 2001.  

Rev. Trufant believes in a holistic approach to ministry, one that involves personal salvation as well as human liberation.  He is committed to building a ministry which addresses not only the needs of Emmanuel’s members, but also those of the community in which the church exists.
