Dr. Charles E. Booth is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He is the son of William Booth and the late Hazel Booth-Sutton. He began his first pastorate in 1970 at the St. Paul’s Baptist Church in West Chester, PA, where he served for seven years. In 1978, he was called to be Senior Pastor of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Columbus, Ohio, where he has faithfully served for over thirty-one years. Dr. Booth was the youngest Pastor called to both of these churches.
Under the leadership of Dr. Booth, the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church completed a 2.1 million dollar building program consisting of a 100 seat Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Chapel, an administrative wing, twelve classrooms, expanded fellowship center, a heating and cooling system, new kitchen facility, and property acquisition.
Dr. Booth is the founder of the Gloria S. Friend (GSF) Christian Academy, named in honor of its first administrator, which opened its doors in September 1993. The Academy currently has grades kindergarten through fifth. The curriculum stresses excellence in academics, African and African-American History and Christian education. The GSF Christian Academy is fully accredited by the Ohio Department of Education.
Dr. Booth received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Howard University, Washington, DC. He earned his Master of Divinity Degree from Eastern Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Booth received his Doctor of Ministry Degree (Proctor Fellow) from United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio.
In addition to providing pastoral leadership to the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Dr. Booth currently serves as Professor of Preaching, Trinity Lutheran Seminary - Columbus, Ohio. He also served as Vice President of the Millennium Association of Pastors. Dr. Booth has traveled the world preaching and teaching the Gospel. He has received many significant invitations including guest lecturer and preacher at the Hampton Ministers Conference; Guest Preacher to enlisted service persons and their families - Kaiserlauten, Germany; North American Preacher, Baptist World Youth Conference - Buenos Aires, Argentina; Baccalaureate Preacher at Lincoln, University, Morehouse College, Howard University School of Law; and Guest Revivalist at many churches throughout the United States, Europe, South America, Central America, and Africa.
Dr. Booth published his first book titled, Bridging the Breach: Evangelical Thought and Liberation in the African-American Preaching Tradition (Urban Ministries 2000). Dr. Booth is a former member of the Advisory Board Member of The African American Pulpit and his written contributions can be found in many resources including: • “Stop Crying Over Spilled Milk,” The African American Pulpit Millennium Edition, (Judson Press); • The Worker (devotional quarterly published by the Nannie H. Dr. Booth has been nominated for and received numerous rewards over the years including: The James E Stamps Alumni Recognition Award - UNCF for Outstanding Contributions to young people attending UNCF and Historically Black Institutions (September, 1999) The Vertner Woodson Tandy Award for dedicated community service - Alpha Phi Alpha - Alpha Rho Lambda Chapter (December 1999) African-American Role Model Award - Dr. Booth has been listed in “Who’s Who Among African-Americans” and on Ebony Magazine’s “Honor Roll of Preachers”.
